On 22 September 2017, the Government of Canada has imposed sanctions against Venezuela, under the Special Economic Measures Act of September 5th which forms a special association with the United States of America.

These measures are unjust and ill-informed and should be rescinded. They will hurt the people of Venezuela; they violate human rights and international law, and they impede dialogue and peace-building in both Venezuela and the region.

A petition to the Canadian government was launched by a group of concerned Canadians who oppose this measure. You can find this at https://petitions.ourcommons.ca/en/Petition/Details?Petition=e-1353. The petition is now closed. Thank you to all those who signed it.

Petition Against Sanctions to be Heard by Canadian Government

March 29, 2018

We today heard from the clerk of petitions who writes “This is to inform you that petition e-1353, which you have submitted on the e-petitions website of the House of Commons, has been certified for presentation to the House. ”

The petition has thus reached the required number of signatures and will be presented to the House. Thanks to all who helped. With Venezuela’s elections due in May, it is all the more important that the election should proceed free from external interference, that the results should be respected by the international community, and that the people of Venezuela should be allowed to govern their own destiny following the election.

Now is the time for more action. We suggest that you contact your local member of parliament and request that she/he support the petition when it is presented. If your MP needs further information, there is material on this site and we can supply answers to any questions they may have.

Congratulations, and keep up the momentum,

The Committee
